    The Viking era lasted from about the early 700’s A.D. to 1000 A.D. They ruled
    the seas for about 250 years.

    During the early time frame they were like many
    other countries, unlearned and barbaric in their actions. But a lot of this
    changed with time and as they explored and learnt new things through other
    cultures. But in many ways they were ahead of the times also. They traveled to
    places others had never heard about or could never hope to see.

    Fierce Vikings

    Viking warriors were very fierce and were often in
    battles. The term “viking” basically came from the term to “go a-viking”
    or raiding. There are different ideas on what the word actually meant. The
    warriors had to be prepared at all times for battle. The sight of a Viking ship pulling onto the shore was
    enough to strike terror into the most stout hearted person!

    able to raid and plunder like they did because they were able to sail in and out

    keel which made sailing much easier. The keel is the part of the boat that goes
    down into the water. it stops the ship from being blown about, and makes
    steering much easier.

    The Vikings had many skilled craftsmen. They had
    blacksmiths who made
    everything from swords to axes.

    There were craftsmen skilled at making
    jewelry, combs and other fine things. The Viking men were very proud of their
    hair and beards!

    The Vikings were probably the first to make and use skis
    and ski poles. They also skated using shin bones!

    The Viking sagas were handed down word of mouth for many, many years.
    Sagas were stories told about their raids, lives and heroes. Their writing was limited even when they developed an alphabet called
    Fulthark for the first 8 letters. They wrote on huge stones which were very
    decorative. This is the Viking alphabet.

    The letters were called runes
    and often written on stones which they also believed could tell the future if
    tossed and read by the right person.

    up when they became Christians.

    Have abc lowercase letters written on cards by children and ask them to make words with them. Start with simple three/four letter words. This will also help the children become familiar with sounds made by combined letters.

    Give vent to your imagination and come up with more interesting games and activities. Bake breads and cakes imitating abc lowercase letters, have abc lowercase letters embroidered in the dress, have playthings in similar shapes… try to surround your child with things that increases the child’s association with the letters. Most importantly, teach your child writing along with reading because a child picks up things faster if he/she is given verbal and written training side-by-side.

  • Shamrock Ice Cream Sandwiches Recipes

    Patrick’s Day treat!

    ***Shamrock Ice Cream Sandwiches***

    Ingredients:

    1 recipe Butter Cookie Dough (will be on bottom of page)

    3 or 4 drops green food coloring

    1 pint ice cream or frozen yogurt, any flavor

    (Its good to have a shamrock cookie cutter for this one!!)

    Method:

    Prepare cookie dough; mix in food coloring. Cover, refrigerate until firm (about 4 hours or
    overnight).

    Preheat oven to 350 F.

    Roll dough on floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out cookies using

    cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheets.

    Bake 8 to 20 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned around edges.
    Remove

    to wire racks; cool completely.

    Remove ice cream from freezer; let stand at room temperature to soften

    slightly, about 10 minutes. Spread 4 to 5 tablespoons ice cream onto flat
    side of half of cookies. Place remaining cookies, flat side down, on ice cream.

    Press cookies together lightly.

    Wrap each sandwich in foil; freeze until firm, about 2 hours or overnight.

    Makes 6 to 8 cookie sandwiches.

    ***Butter Cookie Dough***

    Ingredients:

    3/4 cup butter, softened

    1/4 cup granulated sugar

    1/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar

    1 egg yolk

    1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

    3/4 tsp. baking powder

    1/8 tsp. salt

    Method:

    Combine butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and egg yolk in medium bowl.
    Add

    flour, baking powder and salt; mix well.

    Cover; refrigerate about 4 hours or until firm.

    Makes about 3 cups of dough

  • Turtle Candies Recipe

    Serving Size : 16

    Ingredients:

    • 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1 1/2 cups pecan halves
    • 28 caramels, unwrapped
    • 2 tablespoons whipping cream

    Instructions:

    Microwave half the chips in a glass bowl at HIGH for 1 1/2 minutes, stirring
    after 1 minute.

    Stir until smooth; cool until slightly thickened.

    Drop chocolate
    by tablespoonfuls onto a wax paper-lined baking sheet, shaping into 16 (1 1/2
    inch) circles.

    Reserve remaining chocolate.

    Arrange 4 pecans over each circle;
    chill until firm.

    Place caramels and cream in a glass bowl; microwave at HIGH 2 minutes or
    until caramels melts, stir after 1 minute.

    Let stand 4 minutes or until slightly
    thickened.

    Spoon caramel mixture evenly over pecans.

    Microwave remaining
    chocolate at HIGH 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds; quickly spread over
    caramel mixture.

    Refrigerate until firm.

    YIELD: 16 candies.

    NOTE: You don’t need to use cream to melt with the caramels – milk or even
    water works just as well.
