In some measurement worksheets, the students get the opportunity to measure and make an estimation of length, weight and capacity of several real life objects so that it becomes easier for them to get familiar with the procedure. However, there are worksheets, which principally concentrate on paper and pencil problems based on conversion between variable measuring units.

Measuring worksheets are based on different measuring variables like SI metric ruler, US customary ruler and length conversion. They categorize units of measurement and their probable use. The measurement worksheet based on the US customary ruler gives measurement in GALLONS while the Metric Ruler based Measurement worksheets give measurements in kilograms.

  • Natural Hazard

Natural hazard by way of a physical occurrence namely volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides together with human activities trigger natural disasters. Now, there is one thing that you should trap in the corridor of your memory that calamity transpires when hazards meet vulnerability. Living on that thought, you just cannot consider events hazardous without human involvement. Thus any episode that affects people by means of natural catastrophe can be termed as a natural hazard.

The inevitable calamities leading to natural hazard

Avalanche is at it’s worst in the mountains in winter. It is a geophysical danger where a buildup of snow when on the loose down a slope causes the downslide of a huge rock mass. Here, heaps of material of different types fall or slide hurriedly under the force of gravity causing massive destruction to areas downstream. Conversely, a natural catastrophe like blizzard can even assist in spreading contractible disease like plague.

Floods are hugely disastrous in a lot of ways. Remember, the Great Flood of 1931, thanks to the Hwang Ho River in China. And think of the sorrow caused by the outbreak of an earthquake? It is an adversity, which is a result of the collision between the two tectonic plates within the earth’s crust causing ruptures in the respective area.

A hailstorm is a result of a thunderstorm that showers myriad hailstones that destroys almost everything that comes its way. The one disaster that comes to mind is the damaging hailstorm that struck Munich, Germany on August 31, 1986 and annihilated life and property. A heat wave is a peculiar and a rare disaster, which demands specific combinations of weather events to materialize. In the recent past the European Heat Wave of 2003 was the worst of the lot.

The cyclonic storm system that form over the oceans may come by way of hurricanes, tropical cyclones or even typhoons. The ruinous Atlantic hurricane, the Great Hurricane of 1780 that swallowed Martinique, St. Eustatius and Barbados and the Hurricane Katrina, which distressed the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005 goes without mention. The impact event where an outer space piece of rock or other material bumps with the Earth is quite disastrous as well. If worse becomes worst then Lahar is a dangerous natural disaster. It is similar to a volcanic eruption that comprises a large amount of material, including mud, rock, and ash. It can engulf towns in no time, killing people in scores.

Moreover, a tsunami is a colossal wave of water that splashes over the coastal areas with a height of over 50 feet. Another cause of tsunami may be due to the undersea earthquakes like for example the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake, where the extensive scale of devastation took the world by surprise. Landslide and Mudslide can be pretty dangerous and it usually occurs due to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or general instability in the surrounding land. If all of the above wasn’t enough then there is wildfire, drought, solar flare, tornado, ice storm and not to mention a volcano to face up to.

Although natural hazard is inevitable, the only means to fight it out is through our resilience.

  • Kindergarten Worksheets

Kindergarten worksheets present both theoretical and practical modes of learning. Learning from the book can be monotonous, whereas the field activities can kindle the child’s interest and ability.

    The Genres of Kindergarten Worksheets

The kindergarten level worksheets lay equal emphasis both on English and Mathematics. Devised to ensure lot of fun, the kindergarteners’ worksheets revolve round educational activities, exercises, music, games and easy handicrafts. They incorporate telling time, counting money, learning numbers and sets, also learning weight, time and volume, writing letters or alphabets and many more. The kindergarten worksheets are truly a good start for the novice.

    Application And Effectiveness

Things get registered in the memory once you experience it; when you confront something interesting, it sparks your curiosity and you tend to remember it long enough to ever forget it. Kindergarten level worksheets cash in on this concept and come up with methods that specially appeal to young minds.

Following these worksheets, you too can let your child see and touch things and this will boost his/her retaining ability. For example, do you expect your child to understand what is bitter or salty without giving him/her the chance of tasting it? No. Then let your child learn numbers by seeing it. Draw a big ball and beside it write 1. Again, draw two mangoes, write 2 beside it, and so on. This is the most effective and innovative way of teaching.

Kindergarten worksheets, built around active learning, introduce you to another aspect of effective teaching – repeatedly exposing the child to the same thing. Thus, when you are teaching ‘M’ for Mango, then let your child color a mango yellow and write the letter M. Similar methods can be followed for teaching numbers – you can have them count toys and playthings. Kids will find learning more fun and this will have a permanent impact on their minds.

Kindergarten level worksheets give children good practice but because they perfectly blend fun and play into the process of learning, your children never tire of them. Used sensibly, kindergarten worksheets not only enhance your child’s adeptness, instead nurture a special liking for academics in children.

  • Juan Ponce de León

Juan Ponce de León (1460 – 1521), the legendary Spanish conquistador, was born in Santervás de Campos, Valladolid, Spain. An adventurer to the heart, Ponce de León, took part in many expeditions and conquests.

Particulars about the great explorer and conquistador suggest that his military expeditions started when he joined the war to conquer Granada (which incidentally happened to be the last Moorish state in the Iberian Peninsula). Thereafter, Juan Ponce de León joined forces with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World.

According to available facts, Ponce de León first set his feet on the site, where present Cockburn Town is located, in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He won over the Tainos inhabiting the eastern part of Hispaniola and was made the Governor of the Province of Higuey for his contribution to Spanish imperialism.

When Juan Ponce de León came to know about the immense wealth of Boriken (present Puerto Rico) and he applied to the Spanish authorities for marching orders to this new land. The first Spanish colony in Puerto Rico, named Caparra was established by Ponce de León in 1508. Later on, however, he shifted his base to San Juan. He subdued every attempt at rebellion, running the governance with such proficiency that in 1509, Ponce de Leon was awarded the governorship of Puerto Rico by the Spanish Crown.

Ponce de León was removed from power in 1512, when Diego Columbus won his ascendancy rights to the lands his father had discovered. The perfect picture of honor that he was, Ponce de León was not to be dispirited. To quench his thirst for glory, he went on to discover new areas north of Cuba in 1513. On April 2 that year, Ponce de León anchored in the Northeastern coast of the present State of Florida. He annexed the land in the name of Spain and christened it “La Florida” (the Spanish for Easter season).

A popular story doing the rounds has it that Ponce de León undertook this voyage to Florida region in search of the Fountain of Youth. The story has its roots in the Memoir of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda. The Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas also presents this account of his Florida conquest. However, this has often been regarded as one of the many factoids about the great explorer. Admirers of Juan Ponce de León who picture him in respectable lights, link this voyage to his yearning for spiritual rebirth.

Juan Ponce de León returned to Spain in 1514. He took to the waters once again in 1515, when he was commissioned to undertake an expedition to Guadalupe. This expedition failed and he returned to Puerto Rico where he stayed until 1521.

Ponce de León embarked on his last voyage to Florida in 1521. This was a colonizing expedition and his crew consisted artisans, farmers, priests and even animals. On landing on the southwest coast of Florida, they were attacked by the Calusas. Ponce de León was injured by a poisoned arrow. The entire crew fled with the injured explorer in Cuba, where he breathed his last. Juan Ponce de León was buried in the cathedral in Old San Juan.

  • Kindergarten Math Worksheets

Math – the most dreaded (and boring for some) subject can now be a lot more fun and interesting, if you attempt initiating your kids’ academic career with the kindergarten math worksheets. These worksheets undoubtedly equip you with innovative means of steering your child’s interest towards the subject and encouraging him/her to play with numbers more and more.

Kindergarten math worksheets are an effective way of teaching mathematics to little kids because they introduce the students to scientific ways of learning math – a particular problem is presented in a multiple way so as to invigorate the thinking capability of the leaner best.

Kindergarten Math Worksheets – What Do They Teach?

The math worksheets for kids start with the basics. At first, they children are introduced to numbers; the initial exercises teach a child to read and write numbers until 10. Counting until 100 is also a part of these exercises. Worksheets familiarize kids with concepts of place and face value of numbers, odd and even numbers, etc. Reverse counting is also taught.

Kindergarteners’ math worksheets also cover advanced math curriculum. This incorporates measurements – length, capacity and weight. Children are also given practice in measuring things with non-measuring items, for example measuring the width of a window with a pencil. Students are given a clear view of the time of the day, like morning, afternoon and evening. Enable them to read clock by repeated exposure to clock worksheets.

Kindergarten Math Worksheets – Making Math More Fun Than Work

Teaching in a conventional pattern can be very boring for both the mentor and the student. In math worksheets for kindergarteners, the subject has been dealt thus:

    • Numbers are not learnt as such, instead one is given balls or pencils or objects to count.
    • The child is introduced to vivid representations of geometrical shapes and figures.
    • The coin worksheets introduce your child to coin and let him/her understand the money value of sums in the kindergarteners’ math worksheets.

Math worksheets for kindergarteners emphasize practice. The kindergarten math worksheets are planned on this principle and necessary spice up the learning process.

  • Government

We all need government as individuals and society as a whole for the fulfillment of common goals and progress in all spheres of civic life. Yes, a government is a body that has the power to fabricate and the last word to implement laws inside a civil, corporate, religious, academic, or other organization or group.

Speaking of the branches of government, you will find three main heads viz. the legislative, the executive and not to mention the judiciary. However, in a democratic backdrop, the nomination and the election is usually assumed to be in the hands of the populace. In fact, in the United States of America none other nominates the Supreme Court Justices than the President while the Senate substantiates them. A different scenario prevails in Parliamentary forms of democracy where the Parliament decides the eventual Prime Minister. Traditional forms of government that controlled most of the world centuries before were monarchy and oligarchy.

Government can be of different forms. The first one that comes to mind is democracy. Here, the entire populace embraces the political power. When they are in power directly then you may call it direct democracy and if representatives come into play then you may call it representative democracy. Moving on, you will find autocracy, where an individual totally clutches everything. The monarchies and the republican dictatorships with an omnipotent president or other protagonist take the center stage here. Conversely, oligarchies are that type of governments where a petite group of individuals with common goals have absolute political power.

Government is responsible for the functioning and administering myriad areas of human activity, like trade, education, or medicine or even legal matters in a country. Different methods are also formulated and established like secrecy, police and military forces. Moreover, making agreements with other states and sustaining support within the state are also done.

If that’s not enough, then techniques to uphold support and legitimacy take in providing the infrastructure for transport, justice, administration, communication and not to mention social welfare etc. If govt. spending is the talking point then you must know that government spending in advanced countries fluctuates noticeably. It usually hovers around 30% and 70% of their GDP. Interestingly, in the United States of America, federal government spending consumes fewer than 20% of GDP.

A country seems incapacitated without a government. A government that runs in harmony with the standard canons of justice is a strong shield for protection of individual rights and betterment for all.

  • Great Depression

The term Great Depression refers to the great economic slump, which started in 1929 but the crisis timeline extended to the 1930s.The whole world slouched under the burden but the worst affected centers were North America and Europe. The backbones of heavy industry based cities drooped under the Great Depression. The industrial countries like United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, and Australia were the worst sufferers.

    Causes of Great Depression

There is a debate among the scholars regarding the causes of Great Depression. The search for the cause is deeply related to evade any future depression. The causes may be classified as

    The Wall Street Crash:

The Stock Market crash of 1929 triggered the Great Depression. It reversed the positivism in economic outlook to sheer negativism. Though the Stock Market recovered for a short while in 1930 but for the next two years continuously spiraled downwards. This downturn turned out to be the greatest long-term market decline of the decade.

    Debt Deflation:

Arthur Pigou and Irving Fisher originated the macroeconomic Debt-Deflation view. In the 1920s there was a boom in home mortgages, loans and credit purchases. When price deflation occurred their income fell but the debts remained same with the same dollar amount. With the pressure from creditors the spending amount fell thus flagging the economy. The investment ratio plummeted with poor expectation of profits. In the face of deflation the banks started to pile up reserves thus deepening the deflation.

    Trade Decline:

The hunch of the Great Depression were deepened by the sharp downfall in the International trade in 1930. The ever-widening interventions in the economy made the market vulnerable to the abrupt changes and a high percentage of unemployed persons were gnawing. Many scholars point their accusing fingers at the American Smoot Hawley Tariff Act for reduction in the international trade and thus inviting retaliation.

    Federal Reserve And Money Supply:

Federal Reserve tried to improve the crisis and cut the money supply by 1/3 from 1930 to 1931. Thus businessmen were denied loans deteriorating the investment scenario and speeding up the economic depression.

    Capitalism:

The left saw the Great Depression as the initiation of the end of capitalism’s life .The free market economy was viewed as inherently unstable. However, during the Hoover government interference and regulations increased including high spending price controls and interventions in labor troubles.

    Business:

American president Roosevelt and many ‘New Dealers’ laid the blame on glut of big businesses for the instability in economy. They wanted to establish a ‘New Deal’, which would empower the laborers. They also wanted to curb evils of big corporate by increasing taxes on corporate profits. The best solution to them was Economic regulation.

    The Paradox of Thrift:

Keynes coined the term “paradox of thrift” indicating the cut in the spending ratio to save money after the stock market crash in 1929. The reduced spending aggravated the saturation of market deepening the Great Depression.

    Some Historical Causes:

According to many economists the decision of Britain to revert to Gold Standard of pre WWI life parities is an important cause of economic depression. The cost of World war was enormous and the life of European economy was maimed. The fact of war reparations played a major role in the economic upheaval but Germany paid the largest slice. So Europe couldn’t face the economic crisis with life and vigor and thus moved into the sphere of economic depression.

    Effects And Some Facts

    Effects on Britain
Britain had hardly recovered from the damage inflicted by World War I when the Great Depression hit the nation. This depression undermined the process of rebuilding the economy.

    Effects on Canada
Canada was probably the second worse hit by the Great depression after America. Canada suffered long but there were no bank failures like the US.

    Effects on France
France was hit later during the 1931 when it was trying to rebuild its economic life following the aftermath of the First World War. Great Depression battered the local economy and initiated the riots of 1934. The economic downturn is the partial cause of the formation of the Popular Front led by SFIO socialist leader Leon Blum winning the elections in 1936.

    Effects on Germany
Germany suffered tremendously due to the Great Depression. Wall Street crash led the American banks to cancel new loans thus stopping the repayments under Dawes Plan and Young Plan. In 1932, 90% of German Reparations got cancelled. The Government didn’t increase spending fearing hyperinflation and unemployment reached the peak of 25%. The People lost faith in the Weimer Government. The rest of the story is the rise of Hitler and the rule of the Nazi party practicing an Autarky economy with economic alliances in Latin America and central Europe.

United States – The Effects Of Depression And the Facts Of Revival

The worst victim of the Great Depression is the US. President Hoover’s Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon advocated a shock treatment to deal with the crisis. His motto was “Liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate real estate…” He opined that this measure will bring about a moral fervor to life and people will move out from this system to work hard and live a moral life. Hoover didn’t believe in direct aid but vouched for ‘Voluntary Cooperation’ between business and the government. Initially everything was okay but no business came forward to take the risk.

Roosevelt with the New Deal wanted to ‘reform’ the economy to better the life of the impoverished. New Dealers wanted to transform the economy through regulations.

The Keynesians believed that the war economy emphasized on the huge stimulus required to end the downturn and predicted that as soon as America demobilized another depression would occur. But the forecast was proved false.
