What is Contextual
Vocabulary, and how does it work?
First read the passage about Sea
Turtles. Try and decide what the highlighted words mean. Then test your
powers of deduction and memory with the exercises.
Words are the building blocks of every language and using English vocabulary game to teach English language is one of the most effective methods of doing so. In fact, English language game happens to be a far more productive method of learning the subject, compared to the age-old classroom techniques. No wonder, more and more teachers all over the world are taking resort to vocabulary games to make their students learn the alphabets effectively.
More on vocabulary games
Active participation of the whole class in acquiring, understanding and using English can be achieved to a great extent through interactive English language games, which give the pupil a reason to communicate and a context for speaking practice. As you all know, repetition is essential for developing skill but not in a parrot-like fashion. Thus, if you can present the required repetition to your students in an attractive package then their focus will remain on the fun-environment of the game and unknowingly they will learn using the language.
Actually, learning English through vocabulary games form a part of the contextual approach of teaching whereby the students themselves ascertain the meaning of the words through reading and related activities. The teachers and the parents can indulge in ESL games like innovative and interesting puzzles, fill in the blanks, word finds and true / false game. Interactive exercises in varying levels of difficulty are also apt for increasing students’ vocab skills and are found over the Internet.
Merits of vocabulary games
As Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen and Khuat Thi Tha Nga (authors of “learning vocabulary through games”) puts it, students tend to learn and retain new vocabulary better, when it is applied in a relaxed environment like playing vocab games. In fact it has been proved that an interested and involved class, learning through several fun-filled English language games takes in 100% of the lesson and retains 80% of it.
Secondly, healthy competition that forms an elementary part of the English games encourages player discovery, examination and a voluntary involvement of the child in the learning process. Thirdly it leads to a better bonding between the teacher and the students. Most importantly, these games usher in the real world context into the classroom and thus increase the students’ capacity to speak English in a practical and flexible manner.
Therefore it’s no wonder that the vocabulary games are fast becoming invincible tools for mastering the English language.

Egypt is best seen in Nile cruises. It shows you the modern face of Egypt with an ancient backdrop. Recent price drop led to the advantage of seeing the land, the Egyptian valleys, temple, tomb, pyramid closely than the vertical view of flying over. You can come out of the luxurious cruise and walk the lane of history. In the Egyptian land, people still practice agriculture with wooden ploughs and return to their mud-brick houses at the end of the day.
The Nile Cruises are available in different packages. You can choose a short tour of three to four days or opt for a seven to fourteen days cruise. The longer cruises generally include tours around Cairo. Here you can see the pyramids, museums and visit the valleys, tucked into the middle of nowhere.
You can gear up your adventurous side hiring a Felucca. Feluccas are the ancient Egyptian sailboats. These boats provide crisp and short tours along the Nile river, between Aswan and Luxor. You can enjoy the beautiful night and the starlit sky sleeping on the open ship deck.
On the other hand, the floatal hotel Nile cruises provides all the luxury one can ask for. The bigger ships usually have swimming pools, air conditioning systems, gymnasium, TV and a gala night life to add to. The nightlife in most of the cruises accommodates Nubian shows, belly dancing, fancy dress and cocktail parties. The food satisfies all kind of palate.
The peak season of the Nile cruise is from October to mid April. After mid April the long tour in the boats are closed owing to the falling water levels. However, you can always enjoy the shorter cruises
To know this ancient land it is best to hire a tourist guide along with you. Try taking a packaged tour where food to transportation is taken care off. You can book the best and the safest cruises between US$ 60 to US$ 180 per night per person. Cabins, which are away from the engine room, are the best and most comfortable.
3 Night cruise: This cruise normally plies from Aswan to Luxor. The sights visited are The High Dam, The unfinished Obelisk and Temple of Philae, Temple of Kom Ombo, Edfu Temple and Esna Temple, The Valley of King, Valley Of Queens, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
4 Nights Cruise: This cruise start from Luxor and ends at Aswan. In this extra time you can visit the Temple of Luxor, the temple of Karnak, along with the places one can see in the three night cruise. You can also opt for Botanical Island and Nubian Village, elephantine Island and the tombs of the nobles.
7 Nights Cruise: This is from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa. This river cruise in The Nile is basically to enjoy the same tour more leisurely. You can relax in between the land, valley and ancient temple visits.
Food is taken care of by the cruiser and is spread in a buffet style in scheduled time. Tea, coffee are served everyday at 5 pm, however other drinks are to be collected from the bar counter.
Like food, nightlife is also a gala happening in the cruise. Day one starts with a formal introduction session amongst the ship crew and the guests in a manager’s cocktail party. The other nights normally see Galabia parties and Nubian shows. Galabia party is where you can wear traditional Egyptian dresses, unlike the formal dressing cocktail party. Never mind your lack of stock of the Egyptian dresses, you can buy them or rent them as well. Nubian show is followed by belly dancing and singing. You can wear anything you feel free in the days course but dinner demands a formal dressing.
You should deposit your valuables in the safety deposit box while boarding the cruise boat. Money should be exchanged before the tour. While stopping on land and visiting the land, you can buy Egypt’s exotic and very own collection of mementoes. Here you also need to know how to bargain. Altogether it is a wonderful and ever remembering experience in Egyptian Nile cruises.

Instructions:
Read the passage. Think about the meanings of the
highlighted words.
There is a debate about the name sea turtles
Turtles tortoises and terrapins all belong to the same order. Tortoises live on
land, terrapins live in fresh water and turtles live in salt water. So, turtles
by definition should be sea animals! However some of the larger
freshwater varieties are also called turtles, so we will stick with the name Sea
Turtle, to save confusion.
They belong to the invertebrates and are reptiles. There
are seven known species of sea, or marine, turtle. They vary in size, the
largest being the Leatherback Turtle. We are going to look at the Green turtle.
All of the sea turtles have similar adaptations and similar problems.
The four limbs are flat and can be rotated, so as to
enable them to swim and move on land.
They have a heavy shell protecting most of their body.
The head can be withdrawn into the shell.
They lay their eggs in only a few places, always the same
beaches.
They lay their eggs above the high water mark.
They swim fairly close to the surface of the water.
The structural adaptations really are not a drawback,
or problem. The weight of the shell means that they are clumsy and slow on land,
and so when the females go to lay eggs they can be easily caught. Other than
that, the structural adaptations tend to protect them.
The problem lies with the behavioral adaptations. The
fact that they always return to the same place to lay their eggs makes them vulnerable
to both human and other predators. People and other animals such as birds and
fish, know when the laying season is and where the eggs will be laid. The female
turtles struggle up the beach to a place above the high water mark. There they
dig a shallow pit with their fore flippers, and lie in it. The hind flippers are
then used to dig a deeper pit, into which the eggs are dropped. The number of
eggs varies but the usual amount is around 100.
The eggs are the covered over with sand and the female
returns to the sea. After sometime (from 48-80 days the eggs hatch. All the baby
turtles (known as hatchlings) get together and collectively make their way to
the top of the pit. They then wait for nightfall. After dark, they push out the
top of the nest and make a dash for the sea.
The problems:
Because so many females lay their eggs in the same area, one will
often disturb the nest of another, while digging, and unintentionally
destroy the eggs.
Humans dig up the eggs immediately after they have been laid. They
sell them to restaurants. They are considered a great delicacy in some
places.
Crabs, Monitor lizards and stray dogs will also dig up the nests.
Night birds. Crabs, lizards and dogs pick off the hatchlings
as they make their way back to the sea. The number lost depends to a great
extent on luck. If the hatch on a night with a low tide they have a long way to
go to get to the water line. If it is high tide, more will make it before being
eaten.
If the hatchlings dont reach the water by sunrise other birds
will eat them.
Predatory fish (mostly shark) lie in wait just offshore at the
breeding grounds. They pick off the hatchlings as they make their way out to
sea.
It is estimated that the average female Green Turtle lays
about 1,800 eggs in her lifetime. Only about 400 of these actually develop and
hatch. Of those about 250 make it to the sea, and of those only about 30 will
survive their first week at sea.
Thirty offspring, per adult female seems like a good
number, but the story doesnt end there. Adult turtles are also attacked and
eaten by sharks, and even whales. They also suffer from disease and many are
killed by passing ships and speedboats. They are also hunted as food. The number
of hatchlings, per adult female who actually grow to complete a full life cycle
is probably about three. Again, that isnt bad; it is just about enough for
Green turtles to survive as a species.
However, there is a growing demand for turtle meat and
skin. This means that many adult females are being killed on the beaches. If the
trend continues, the Green turtles could well die out altogether becoming extinct.
Most places now have laws to protect the nesting beaches.
Neat Turtle Facts:
Turtle hatchlings are carnivorous, whereas adult turtle
are mostly vegetarian.
No one knows where turtles go during their fist year of
life.
Females will swim thousands of miles from feeding grounds
to nesting beaches and back again.
The four main nesting beaches of ALL Green turtles are
found on the Costa Rican Coast, the Island of Ascension, the Seychelles and the
Great Barrier Reef.
